What needs to be repaired and why

Building contractors for Wai o Rua – Stratford Aquatic Centre have been undertaking some minor repairs at the facility, with the mahi set to continue over the next few months.

Victoria Araba, SDC Director - Assets, says it’s common for new buildings, like the aquatic centre, to settle down slightly after construction which can cause small cosmetic flaws, like hairline cracks in some tiles or surfaces. Contractors are also investigating discoloration of flooring in one of the changing rooms.

“Our community will notice our contractors working to fix minor issues at Wai o Rua, and some areas may be off limits while the repairs are being done. We really appreciate people’s patience during this time, and we’ll do everything we can to limit the inconvenience to pool users,” says Victoria.

“It’s normal to remedy small issues after a new facility settles and the work is being done at no extra cost to us or our ratepayers, as it’s covered by the facility’s defects liability period.”

Female changing room

Update - Friday 1 February

Our female changing rooms are back in action!

We're pleased to say that the flooring in the female changing rooms is finished a little earlier than planned. It's fully open for use now. Thank for your patience while the work was underway.

Update - Wednesday 28 February

You may notice the smell of resin being applied today

Our contractors are applying resin to the floor of the female changing rooms today (Wednesday 28 February) and you may notice an odour from this work. Our staff will have the doors open to allow fresh air to circulate through the building to minimise any smell, but it may still be noticeable. If you're sensitive to odours and want to check if any odour is noticeable, or if you have any questions, please call our team on 06 765 6275.

Update - Friday 23 February

The female changing rooms will be closed for 7 days from Monday 26 February

The female changing rooms at Wai o Rua will be closed from Monday 26 February for 7 days while contractors fix issues with flooring discoloration. These repairs will be done at no additional cost to council or ratepayers.

We anticipate that the changing rooms will re-open on Monday 4 March, but we’ll give an update here if that timing changes. Our three family / accessibility-friendly bathrooms are available for use.

Thank you for your patience while this mahi is underway. If you’ve got any questions, please give us a call on 06 765 6275.

Family / accessibility-friendly bathrooms

Update - Thursday 22 February

Family / accessibility-friendly bathrooms are back to normal

Contractors have finished work in the accessibility-friendly changing rooms. The rooms are fully waterproof again and you can use the showers. Thanks for your patience!

Update - Thursday 8 February

Family / accessibility-friendly bathrooms out of action for repairs

We’re repairing our three family / accessibility-friendly bathrooms. New tiles are being installed and this work will take up to three days to complete. During this time, you won’t be able to access the rooms.

Once the tiling is done, you can use the bathrooms for changing, but the showers won’t be functional until the waterproofing has cured, and the shower seats are re-installed. We’ll let you know when you can get everything wet and splashy again.

Our large male and female changing rooms with toilets and showers will still be up and running as usual during this time, but we’re sorry that whānau and our swimmers who need accessibility-friendly changing spaces will be inconvenienced.

If you’ve got any questions about this work, please give us a call on 06 765 6275.
